RODE: SCUTT�S BRIDGE MILL
This was one of the fulling mills on the Frome to which in-
spectors of woollen cloth were appointed in 1727. By 1808 it was
the property of Henry Batten and Thomas Pooll of Rode, clothiers,
who then insured their woollen factory and fulling mill there for
�500, and the stocks, water-wheel and gearwork for a further �150.
In 1816 the firm employed forty hands there. Their trade was
carried on until 1835 when the machinery at the factory was
advertised. It consisted of two 44-in. scribbling engines, three 32-in.
and one 34-in. carding engines (by Badham), two tuckers, three
70- one 60- and one 50-spindle billies, ten 80-spindle jennies,
fifteen shearing frames (most by Harmer), a brusher, and two gig
mills. A dye-house and three racks stood nearby, but the firm did its
milling at Rode Bridge.
The factory was probably unoccupied for some years, but in 1856
it was let to James Taylor and Sons. The firm was evidently in some
financial difficulty in 1879, when three mules, two sets of engines
and other machinery were offered under a bill of sale. Although
later directories describe Taylors as fullers and dressers, cloth was
still made at Scutt�s Bridge until 1900; they also did work on com-
mission for firms in Frome and Trowbridge, until the factory finally
closed about 1904.
