Extracts from Harry Hopkins booklets

In 1717 some of Benjamin Crabb’s children (living at Tellisford Mill) were involved in a fight at Tellisford which led to a Court Case at the Somerset Quarter Sessions. The actual Hearing was held at Road on 6th May 1717 and the proceedings were recorded as follows:-

Stephen Gerie of the parish of North Bradley in the County of Wilts scrubler being sworn and examined deposeth as followeth (that is to say) That on Easter Monday last his son William Gerie came home in a bad condition and on his enquiry into the matter his said son told him that John Crabb William Crabb Benjamin Crabb all the sons of Benjamin Crabb of Tellisford in the County of Somerset (clothier) on his said son’s endeavouring to part two other boys then fighting at Tellisford aforesaid fell on him struck up his holler threw him down and beat him. That he has been worse and worse ever since and is now so bad that he is not able to come from home. That his said son further told him that if he died of this illness it was occasioned by the said Crabbs. And this informant further saith that he hath applied himself to John Jones an Apothecary in Norton St. Philips and had said he was very bad and hoped he might recover but could not tell.

Stephen Gery.

Two deeds dated April 21st and 22nd 1721 were devices for transferring the above properties and were made between Henry Whitaker, Nathaniel Harris and John Pockeridge executors of the Will of Anthony Stock of Road, a drugget maker, deceased, John Stock (who was son and heir of the above Anthony) and his wife Elizabeth, Edward Biggs and Margery his wife (who was daughter of the above Anthony) all of Road of the one part and John Batten a drugget maker of Road, of the other part.

Anthony Stock had mortgaged some of the lands to the late Edward Wadman of Wingfield and Anthony Stock’s executors discharged this mortgage by paying 107.6.0d and then arranging a transfer to John Batten. Batten paid one shilling to each of the above first party and the sum of 130.14s.0d for the following lands and premises:-

1 yard of pasture in an enclosure of William Crabb’s, Gent, part adjoining a close called Twenty Acres on the east and on the other part running from the close called Quarre Close under the hedge of William Crabb’s down to Flexhams Brook;

1 acre of arable in the Northfield of Road in an enclosure of John Howell’s – which said acre lies on the north side of the highway leading from Flexhams Brook to Tellisford and adjoins on the west to the new enclosure of William Crabb’s formerly exchanged by John Howell and Anthony Stock for 1 acre of land in an enclosure late Anthony Stock’s on Perry Hill adjoining to an enclosure formerly granted by copy to John Lansdown on the west and to Johnsons Tyning on the south;

A loan of 400 in 1739

A deed dated 7th. March 1739 reveals that William Crabb the elder of Road, gent, (and his son William of Bradford on Avon) made an agreement with John Thresher whereby William the elder became bound to Thresher in a penal sum of 800. William the elder borrowed 400 at an interest rate of 4% and promised to repay this on the following 6th March. The deed made arrangements for securing the loan by mortgaging:-

All that messuage tenement or dwellinghouse, backsides, gardens, and orchards thereunto adjoining and belonging now in the possession of him the said William Crabb the elder and all those four tenements or dwellinghouses with the barton and garden ground thereunto adjoining and belonging now in the several tenures of Edward Allen David Swetman William Whitchurch and William Ball tenants to William Crabb the elder and which four said tenements or dwellinghouses last mentioned were formerly a malthouse or part of one and then in possession of the said William Crabb the elder. And also all those two closes of meadow pasture or arable land commonly called or known by the name of Gosford late Richard West’s possession containing by estimation twenty and two acres (more or less). One other close of pasture or arable ground containing by estimation one acre and a half (be the same more or less) commonly called or known by the name of Tellisford Hill which said closes of land are now in the occupation of Robert Pike.

The mortgaged premises were in the parishes of Road, Woolverton, Tellisford and North Bradley or in one or either of them and were purchased by William Crabb the elder’s late father from Henry Bayntun on the 26th April 1688. William Crabb granted the properties in February 1703 in trust to his son William (and his son).

Abell Wilshire made his Will in 1711 and probate was granted in 1714. He left closes of land in Rode called Trubbs (then in the possession of his son Thomas) and land in Tellisford called Bences Moore (occupied by William Tylee) to his trustees one of whom was William Crabb of Rode, a gentleman.

Memorandum of an Agreement made the Sixteenth day of June 1737 between Richard Davison of Road of the one part and the Churchwardens and Overseers and other payers of the said Parish of Road whose names are hereunto subscribed of the other part for the Churchwardens and Overseers of the said Parish of Road for the time being to hold All that Dwelling House at Road Townsend where Christian West lately lived and the Gardens thereunto belonging (the Barn and Stable excepted) for three years to commence at Mid-summer next under the yearly rent of five pounds to be paid by two equal half yearly payments at Christmas and Midsummer and if the Parish doth like it at the end of the said three years to hold and continue the same for seven years from the date hereof and if liked at the end of the said seven years to continue the same House for fourteen years from the date hereof for the same rent.

Richard Davison to keep the House in repair and discharge all taxes. Richard Davison to make chimneys and any other things necessary which the Parish shall think fit and have occasion of and what money soever Richard Davison do lay out in new erections at the Parish’s request the Churchwardens and Overseers by and with the consent of the Parish doth promise to pay him the lawful interest of all such money so laid out. Rev. Bakers Comments on the Crabb Family

He refers to a parchment terrier? of 1606 in the Division of the Registry oat Wells.

A pedigree of the Crabb family states that Priscilla, daughter of the Rev. Robert? Vizor, Rector of Tellisford married in 1640 at Tellisford Peter Crabb of Taunton clothier & was buried at Tellisford the same year. Neither of these events is recorded in the register. Peter Crabbs father was of Southwick (will proved in …. court Sarum May 29th 1627). The long

association? of the Crabb family with Tellisford seems

to have …. with the marriage to P. Vizor. Peters

brother William is described in the pedigree as of Tellisford, but see

another note about this

below (ref. 42)

He ( the Rector) had been instituted in 1583

Letter written Aug 1 1943. There is some confusion of the mystery

about the marriage of Priscilla Vizard. The old register

records the burial in 1640 of Priscilla wife of Peter Crooke

and daughter of Robert Vizard, former recor of this parish.

Since this entry was evidently made by her own brother, the

rector in 1640 he must have known his sisters married surname.

It would seem from the latter text that the former is incorrect.

THE CRABB VAULT – TELLISFORD

In July 1928 a trench was dug round the exterior Church walls in an attempt to control a damp problem. The trench was a concrete channel intended to keep dry the walls and floor which had been causing some concern. During this excavation a vault was discovered which had been built on to the foundation of the south wall of the Chancel – the side wall of the vault and the foundations of the Chancel formed one block of masonry.

The vault was roofed with an arch springing from the east to the west ends and in the centre of the arch was an opening large enough to enable a coffin to be lowered down. This opening had been covered with flat stones. The floor of the vault was earth.

The vault contained two lead coffins for Edmund Crabb who died in 1875 and his wife Caroline who had died in 1864. By 1928 Edmund’s wooden coffin had rotted away apart from a piece of wood which had a handle attached. Caroline’s wooden coffin was in a much better condition due to the use of better quality material. Perhaps her husband had bought her the best. Her coffin had been draped with a cloth covered in studs and had in fact been brought to Tellisford from London in 1875 to be placed alongside her husband. When found the coffins were 15″ apart.

The vault also contained many bones which indicates that there had been other coffins there before 1864. Most of these bones had been placed together at the western end of the vault and three skulls were found in the pile.

The side walls of the vault indicate that joists were put in position to support the coffins at interment for there were niches cut out of two bricked walls facing each other – three niches in each wall. After interment and before sealing the vault up these joists were removed and the coffins lowered to their final resting place. In one of the niches was found (in 1928) a brass plate inscribed Ann Crabb died June 11th. 1816 aged 27 years. This small plate was left on Caroline’s coffin when the vault was closed up.

Edmund’s lead coffin was 5′ 9″ long and Caroline’s 6′ 3″. In 1930 the Reverend R.W. Baker saw photographs of Edmund and Caroline Crabb (in the possession of a relative) and he observed that Caroline was the taller of the two. (I have been unable to trace any descendants who might now have these photographs).

Caroline’s burial was not recorded in the Burial Register because she was originally interred in London (in 1864). When her husband died in 1875 she was exhumed and brought to Tellisford to be buried with him. A diary of Mrs. Louisa D. Baker (buried at Tellisford in 1907) says for Monday May 3rd. 1875 Mrs. Crabb’s body brought from London and put in the vault by her husband. The inscription on her coffin read Mrs. Caroline Crabb Born May 25th. 1814. Died January 19th. 1864. The inscriptions on both coffins were perfectly legible in 1928 but unfortunately no record was made of Edmund’s. Both their names are recorded on the flat stone over the vault.

They left a daughter called Mary Ann Carpenter Crabb and she died a spinster in 1926. She owned the Mill and some pasture land until 1905 and she sold two cottages facing Bolands (called Field Cottage and Vine Cottage) a few years before that. (She also owned a small piece of land on Rode Common which had probably been given to her ancestor following the inclosures). Mary Ann Carpenter Crabb lived for many years at St. Albans where she died and it is recorded in several places that she was a brilliant painter. A tray painted and exhibited by her was so admired by Queen Mary that she bought it and commissioned another.

The Reverend R.W. Baker recorded that he remembered the funeral of Edmund Crabb in 1875. He saw the hearse with its plumes coming down Norton Lane and recalled Miss Crabb enveloped in crape taking tea with his parents after the Service.

The Crabb coffins were found 15″ apart but they were moved closer together in 1928 to enable a new brick wall to be built to replace the existing wall which was in the way of the new trench. During this work the lower part of the north wall of the vault was not disturbed and this remains under the concrete trench between the new 9″ brick wall and the foundations of the Chancel. This undisturbed portion measured 2′ 3″ in height.

Crabbs at Church Farm Tellisford

Church Farmhouse (Brunt) had an inscription moulded into its eastern wall – P.C. W.C. 1623 with two Tudor roses. Baker stated that it was destroyed on renovations in 1925 when the Brunts came in but David’s father Norman said it was hidden behind plaster. The property belonged to the Crabb family and it was said by Norman (I don’t know of his evidence) that P.C. was Peter Crabb.
