Is the Rode Festival running this year?

  2. admin

Hi, you’ve caught the rode village site as we’re revamping it, so there isn’t much information on here at the moment. But I can tell you that yes, it is going ahead in 2010 and it’s going to be on Saturday 17th July.

Check back here soon for more details.

Someone told me about a forthcoming talk from the author of the Mr Witcher book (sorry may have spelt that wrong) and possible tours of the village based on it. Is this correct, is it part of the summer festival and do you have any dates yet. My book group may well be interested and we are only at Leigh on Mendip

    Hi Sue

Thanks for your email. That’s not something we’re immediately aware of, but we’ll look into it and see what we can find out for you.

    Best wishes

    Hullo

I appreciate this may not be the place to ask but could you possibly tell me when and why the name of the village changed from Road to Rode?

  10. admin

Hello Peter – I think it may have had something to do with the murder at Road Hill House, but I’m not sure. I will ask our resident local history buff and get back to you.

Further to Sue’s question asked months ago (March 17th) .. this is the country so things take time here!

    The answer is from:

    http://www.thisiswiltshire.co.uk/news/headlines/8239442.Rode_murder_reaches_150th_anniversary/ :-

Andrew Jones, 49, of Innox Road, Trowbridge, will host his talk about the murder at Roundstone Prep School, in Polebarn Road, Trowbridge, from 7.30pm on FRIDAY JULY 2ND..

He said: “The first time I came across the case was a BBC series in the 1980s called Cruelly Murdered. I have read all the books since.

“I believe the case is unsolved. Constance’s confession of 1886 just doesn’t hold water.

“I have my own theories and supporting evidence that I don’t believe anyone else has picked up on, which I will reveal at my talk.”

Jones, a caretaker at John of Gaunt School in Trowbridge and a lay Baptist preacher, will also host a guided walk around Rode on July 25 from 3pm. He is also writing a book on the murder for Trowbridge Museum.

ALSO ON THIS SUNDAY JULY 4TH ….

….. RARE OPPORTUNITY TO SEE ROUND THE GARDENS OF ROAD HILL HOUSE ( NOW CALLED LANGHAM HOUSE) FROM 15:00-17:00. NOT TO BE MISSED!

History…I am researching my family history, and have found out that an ancestor of mine came from Rode. His name was Johnathan Wheeler. He married a Grace Long. about 1815. His father was Isaac Wheeler and his mother was a Frances Noad. Daughter of Johnathan Noad and Sally Whittaker. whose father owned one of the mills in Rode. Is there anyone who could help me with any information about these families. Thank you.

  21. admin

Hi Judy – here are the details:

    25 July · 15:00 – 20:00
    Location Meet outside Langham House
Local historian Andrew Jones will lead a guided walk around Rode to look at key sites involved in the murder and its subsequent investigation.

(Will not include entry to the grounds of Langham House.)

    Hi Dianne

If you send your email address to info@rodevillage.com, I will pass on your question to a member of the local history team who has a list of some rode families. Or you may find what you are after here: http://www.avpu52.dsl.pipex.com/Families.html

    Best wishes
